BKC Layer 2

BKC Layer 2 is a Layer 2 solution designed to address Bitkub Chain's limitations.

Background

The blockchain trilemma highlights the challenge of simultaneously achieving security, scalability, and decentralization in blockchain technology. It is difficult for most blockchains to balance these three aspects effectively.

One approach to addressing the blockchain trilemma is sharding, which involves breaking down the blockchain into smaller pieces, or shards, each capable of processing its transactions and smart contracts. This method aims to improve scalability without compromising security or decentralization.

Other potential solutions include side chains and state channels. Side chains are separate blockchains designed to perform specific tasks, thereby reducing the load on the main chain. State channels allow transactions to be conducted off-chain, with the final state of these transactions being recorded on the main chain.

The blockchain trilemma is also addressed through Layer 2 Roll-ups, an innovative solution designed to enhance blockchain scalability by processing transactions off the main chain while still relying on its security. There are two primary types: Optimistic Roll-ups and Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Roll-ups. Optimistic Roll-ups assume transactions are valid by default, allowing for faster processing and requiring verification only in case of disputes. In contrast, ZK rollups use cryptographic proofs to validate transactions before they are finalized, ensuring greater privacy and efficiency. These technologies reduce fees and improve transaction throughput, making blockchain applications more accessible and effective.

Introducing BKC Layer 2

BKC Layer 2 is a Layer 2 solution designed to address Bitkub Chain's limitations. Initially, Bitkub Chain supported only a limited number of transactions per second with relatively low transaction fees. However, Bitkub Chain L2 alleviates congestion issues experienced with Bitkub Chain and offers even lower transaction fees.

Why BKC Layer 2?

BKC Layer 2 enhances security by utilizing the strong security measures of Bitkub Chain. Bitkub Chain functions as a settlement layer, having the final authority on the validity of off-chain transactions. This guarantees that the overall network security remains intact, even as transactions are efficiently processed on BKC Layer 2.

BKC Layer 2 reduces congestion on the Bitkub Chain by handling a large volume of transactions off-chain. This not only boosts throughput but also lowers transaction fees and confirmation times. Users can now conduct fast and cost-effective transactions, thus making blockchain technology more scalable for everyday use.

While scalability is crucial, it should not compromise decentralization. BKC Layer 2 is engineered to uphold a high level of decentralization by depending on the fundamental security model of blockchain. Bitkub Chain acts as the ultimate adjudicator, ensuring transaction validity and preserving the trustless nature of the network.

Our Approach

BKC Layer 2 will utilize Optimistic Rollups. Optimistic Rollups operate on an 'optimistic' approach to executing off-chain transactions. This means they assume all Layer 2 transactions are valid unless challenged and proven wrong by an honest network validator. We use a 'fraud-proof' mechanism to detect invalid transactions. A valid fraud-proof nullifies the faulty transaction and re-executes it to update the rollup’s state. However, if the optimistic rollup batch is unchallenged during the dispute period, the transaction data are successfully added to the Ethereum main chain. Optimistic Rollups could be a better fit for applications requiring quick transaction processing and tolerating a delay in transaction finality.
